Typically eGaming software applications are heavily reliant on data. The issue has always been that the standard architectures of  applications have a single point of failure and performance bottleneck at the database tier.

Content Databases consist of a active/active or active/passive master database cluster with a bunch of read-only slaves that have the same content. 

Each eGaming application server has its particular read-only server assigned manually by a script. When the read-only servers fail, or needs to be taken down for maintenance or are slow to respond, IT administrators have to manually update the app servers to now point to a new hot-standby or worse yet point to another load bearing server changing the static load balancing act.  In some cases where the apps need to send very few updates/writes they need to know which server to write to and which server to read from.
